Municipality of Anogeia

Anogeia is a rural mountainous community situated at an altitude of 750 meters, nestled in the shadow of the everlasting Mount Ida/Psiloritis, within the UNESCO Global Geopark. According to one edition of the myth, the god Zeus was born and raised in the Ideon Andron cave. Following in the footsteps of Xenios Zeus, the god of hospitality raised on Idaean soil, Anogeia is a place with a wild appearance, akin to the majestic slopes of Psiloritis, and a purity reminiscent of the snow at its peak. It is open and welcoming to all those eager to explore it, revealing not only what meets the eye but, above all, something waiting to be discovered. The local population is predominantly composed of shepherds and farmers, while a notable segment of the community pursues higher education with the aim of creating job opportunities in their hometown. Simultaneously, Anogeia serves as a robust cultural hub for Crete and Greece, actively preserving elements of its cultural heritage through influential associations. With a distinct local dialect, a rich history, and a tradition that extends far into the past, Anogeia is more than just a "museum piece"; it is a way of life. It's a place you may or may not resonate with, but one that you will never forget. All that's required is the openness to embrace its logic and become a part of it.
