DOMOKOS

The new Municipality of Domokos includes the former municipalities of Domokos, Xyniada and Thessaliotida which are now designated as Municipal Units. The seat of the municipality is the local community of Domokos which is built like an amphitheatre in a panoramic site with a view of the plain of ancient Thesaliotidas and Estiotidas as far as the mountains of Agrafa and Kozakas, the ancient homeland of Asclepius.  The Municipality of Domokos is a historic place with a rich cultural and folklore tradition. The whole area had significant historical and strategic presence in Hellenistic times and it is even mentioned by Strabo, and Xenophon. Each local community brings its own unique history, allowing every visitor to explore the place and discover traditions, ancient ruins, historical remains, and whitewashed churches. The area is generally rich in mythological material.

The inhabitants of the municipality are mainly engaged in farming (sheep, cattle), the production of dairy products such as the exceptional katiki, and agriculture with their main activity the cultivation of cereals, maize, alfalfa, cotton, pulses (lentils Vouziou) and various vegetables (mainly industrial tomato). In recent years, the local farmers have experimented with new crops, such as energy crops (sunflower, cardoons, etc.), but also in tree crops such as walnut, the pomegranate, and apple trees. However, we should not fail to mention the systematic cultivation of aromatic plants, with products (mountain tea, oregano, mint, etc.) of high quality enjoying great demand throughout Greece.
