« Val-De-Marne, Department » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « Partner city »

In Ile-de-France Region, Val-de-Marne is composed of 47 municipalities. The confluence of the Seine and the Marne naturally makes it a département of water. It's one of the smaller French departments in area. On 10 July 1964, a law decreed the creation of new départements around Paris. The Val de Marne was officially born on February 24, 1965, the merger of 29 municipalities in the department of Seine and 18 others belonging to the Seine-et-Oise. On October 4, 1967, the department had its first elected assembly and its first president, communisit Gaston Viens, followed by the official appointment of its first Prefect, Lucien Lanier, on 1 December.
