BRUSSELS Capital Region and its 19 municipalities

« BRUSSELS Capital Region and its 19 municipalities » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « Partner city »

Aims:

  • To better involve citizens in public life and interacte with local authorities
  • To take part in a network of European municipalities and regions keen to improve local democracy in their place and in Europe

At the moment, the territory of the Region of Brussels-Capital, made up of 19 Brussels Municipalities, extends over 162 km2. On January 1st, 2010, the Region of Brussels-Capital numbered 1.089.538 inhabitants. The Brussels Region is the only one organised in a bilingual way. It exercises its legislative power by Prescriptions, the legal value of which is not equivalent to that of the federal Laws and regional Decrees. It also has a particular link with the federal authority, bound to its international role and to its function as capital. This relation is translated in particular by the implementation of the Beliris co-operation mechanism.
