Formed in 1965, the London Borough of Merton is an outer London borough to the south-west of the capital. It has a population of 200,500 residents and is home to the world-famous All England Lawn Tennis Club, where the Wimbledon Championships take place.

Each year Merton celebrates Local Democracy Week and organises events that bring together our elected politicians with future generations of electors.

This year is no different; Merton Council will be running a series of activities for children and young people in the borough to raise their awareness of how democracy works in Merton. Our programme of events will include:

  • Tours of the Civic Centre for local Primary schools every weekday during the week. These tours are given every year and are extremely popular. Schools will be given the opportunity to meet the Mayor in her Parlour, go up on the roof of the 14-storey Civic Centre, and visit the Council Chamber where key meetings take place.
  • A tour of the Houses of Parliament, hosted for schools in her constituency by Mitcham and Morden MP, Siobhain McDonagh. This year will be the sixth year running that Ms McDonagh MP will be hosting this extremely popular tour.
  • Wimbledon MP, Stephen Hammond is offering tours of the Houses of Parliament to schools in his constituency or visits to schools to talk about democracy. Schools should contact Mr Hammond's office directly to arrange.
  • A debate between members of Merton Youth Parliament and key councillors on political hot topics.
  • A talk on local democracy and the role of councillors to members of the Merton Children's Council at their Annual General Meeting. The talk, to be given by Councillors Maxi Martin, Maurice Groves and Peter Southgate, will be followed by a questions and answers session.
  • In addition, some individual councillors visit local schools to talk about being a councillor and local democracy in Merton.
