« Kharkiv » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « 12-Star City »
While most of the population of the City of Kharkiv are Orthodox Christians, representatives of many other religious groups and faiths live here. As one of the major Muslim festivals is being held this year at approximately the same date as ELDW, the city authorities have decided to take advantage of that coincidence to promote the theme of this year's ELDW: Living together in culturally diverse societies: respect, dialogue, interaction.
As the main purpose of the Eid-al-Adha festival is to share a sacrificed animal with those in need, the city authorities together with the Kharkiv Muslim community provided special presents for temporarily displaced persons living in Kharkiv and disabled children.
The event is a good opportunity to inform all the citizens of Kharkiv about the Muslim community living in the city, their customs and traditions. It also contributes to the integration of representatives of different ethnic groups and religious communities.
