Be?ikta? Municipality Draws Attention to Murders of Women and ?stanbul Convention

Be?ikta?
From 24/08/2020 to 30/10/2020
Based on the idea that the violence against women takes its source from the gender inequality between men and women, the Be?ikta? Municipality placed a Digital Monument in Barbaros Square in order to draw attention to the Istanbul Convention aiming to establish full equality between men and women, of which Turkey is a party. While the names of all women having been murdered since 2008 are listed in the digital monument located in the Barbaros Square, significant articles from the Istanbul Convention are also displayed. The Be?ikta? Mayor Mr. R?za Akpolat made a statement on the subject and said; “We are against gender-based discrimination and all forms of violence against women. The Istanbul Convention, assurance of nonviolent life, should be fully implemented. We stand with all women in the struggle for equality.” In the meantime, the Be?ikta? Municipality has placed announcements about the Istanbul Convention on buildings, billboards and posters all over the district to raise awareness about the issue. While walking on the road or passing by car, people can scan the QR code on the boards using their phone and reach to the Istanbul Convention online. In addition to this, the slogan "Istanbul Convention Keeps You Alive!" will be reflected on the walls of the Be?ikta? City Hall.
