ISTANBUL CONVENTION- THE SOCIAL TASK OF A LOCAL AUTHORITY

The social policies of Edremit Municipality are particularly focused on the defence of women’s rights and to build awareness concerning one of the saddest social plagues afflicting our communities: feminicide and violence against women. The cases of domestic violence and murders increase constantly while at the same time the general awareness seem to fade occasionally. Covid-19 emergency exacerbated some critical family situations increasing the number of domestic abuses and cases of violence against women. The topic, which is particularly felt in Turkey, need to be constantly renovate with initiatives involving women and men of local communities. Edremit Municipality made the struggle against women violence one of the most important priorities of its administration. The aim is to encourage women and their families to denounce the abuses and to create a network of support with the other local governmental institutions in order to save the lives of women and their children as well. The particular activities organised in the frame of ELDW has been conducted during all the year with the cooperation of the Commission for Women Rights of the Citizen Council of Edremit Municipality. Due to Covid19 several activities like demonstrations and march for the women rights has been cancelled but some trainings and dissemination activities has been organised in compliance with the precautions for Covid19 pandemic emergency.
