Children experience democracy

Edremit Municipality Council Chamber
From 10/10/2017 to 10/10/2017
Children have been received by the Mayor who explained them the main responsibilities of the mayor and deputy mayors and the different organs within a municipality. After a brief and enjoyable time spent with the Mayor, the students have been invited to take place at the Council Chamber where they elected representatives among themselves to run the meeting. The agenda of the council was to decide about the colour to paint a bridge in the city centre. All the children members of the council expressed their preference among four candidate colours throughout a secret ballot. The purpose of this activity was to acquaint children with the election mechanism of a democratic system showing them how democracy can be efficient and crucial in a decision process. For this reason Mayor Mr.Kamil Saka promised the children that the bridge would be painted blue in a few weeks to strengthen their future certainty that voting means to make a change. At the end of the Children's council session, the students received several gifts from the Mayor such as balloons, leaflets of ELDW and the book “Lokum’la Avrupa’ya” an introduction to EU edited by EU delegation of Turkey.
