Establishment of the Public Council on Interethnic Relations under the Mayor of Kharkiv

On October, 9 the Public Council on Interethnic Relations was established under the Mayor of Kharkiv. Its aim is to support the activity of national NGOs in the decision making process by Kharkiv local authorities with regard to maintenance and development of ethnic, cultural, language and religious identity of national minorities. It is to deepen democratic principles and ensure harmony and accord between different nations dwelling in Kharkiv.
Among the main objectives of the Public Council are the following:
- to form tolerance and harmony in interethnic relations in Kharkiv;
- to encourage national NGOs to take part in developing regulatory legal acts issued by Kharkiv City Council;
- to submit proposals as for challenges within interethnic relations, maintenance of rights for national minorities in Kharkiv, ethnocultural development of national groups etc.
This Public Council proves to be a viable tool to hear the voice of all Kharkiv residents. It increases citizens’ participation to local decisions and unites Kharkiv community, which ensures the democratic system of governance in Kharkiv.
