« Albanian Association of Communes » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « Partner association »
The Albanian Association of Communes took the initiative of organizing the European Week of Local Democracy in 12 communes. This initiative of the Council of Europe has the goal of increasing citizen participation in the local level through local or national events. During October – November 2013, the Association of Communes in cooperation with 12 pilot communes organized “Open Days” with students and youth. These Open Days benefited from the engagement of the Mayor and local staff of communes of Kolonje, Golem, Bushat, Dajt, Maminas, Kashar, Berdice, Petrele, Zerqan, Gjinar, Mbrostar and Synej. Tailor made materials were prepared for the students to get more acquainted with the functioning of the local government in Albania, the European institutions and citizen participation in local life. The organization of the Open Days increased the opportunity to inform the citizens on the performance of the commune, promote the role of the local governments and of their communities, discuss issues of concern with the aim of improving the communes’ performance, transmit the message of shared responsibility and stimulate the engagement of local communities. It is the third year in a row that AAC has been organizing events in the Albanian communes in the frame of ELDW.
