Büyükçekmece Municipality was established as a township. Büyükçekmece has been well-known of it’s agricultural and touristic potential. It showed a huge development in 1980s and it’s population grew day by day.
On the 4th of July 1987 Buyukcekmece became a district; linked to the efforts made regarding city planning after 1994 (drainage network, decontamination facilites, parks, environment monitoring, taking energy and telecommunication networks to the underground, illumination systems). Due to its efforts, Büyükçekmece has turned to a modern European district.
Büyükçekmece Municipality has been dazzling and eye-catching cultural activities and projects in cooperation with the European Union and other institutions. In 2014, Büyükçekmece Municipality organized and hosted the 15th Büyükçekmece International Culture and Art Festival which became the first-award winner of CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals) in 2010. In addition, Büyükçekmece also had the title "12 star city" in 2012 and 2013.

Better involve citizens in public life and interacte with local authorities
Improve social cohesion and respect of the others in the community
Take part in a network of European municipalities and regions keen to improve local democracy in their place and in Europe
Improve the knowledge of human rights and democracy especially among the young population
