KATOWICE

Katowice is the tenth largest city in Poland. It is also the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship. The city is one of the main industrial centres of Europe, but it is mostly the largest city in the industrial town of Upper Silesia, a conurbation of 3,487,000 inhabitants. According to Eurostat, the metropolitan area of Katowice is the eleventh largest urban area in the European Union behind Milan but before Stuttgart. The city is the capital of the administrative district of Katowice City. Katowice was awarded the Europe Prize 2008, awarded by the Council of Europe.
