« Municipality of Patras » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « Partner city »
Patras is Greece's third largest city and the regional capital (metropolitan centre) of Western Greece, in the northern Peloponnese 215 km (134 mi) west of Athens. The city is built at the foothills of Mount Panachaikon overlooking the Gulf of Patras.
Respecting the principles of ELDW 2016, a synergy scheme was initiated by the Municipality of Patras consisting of twenty one local stakeholders who co-organised a series of events in the sectors of education, culture, justice-law, media, civil society. through the active cooperation and in synergy with the following stakeholders: initiative is an outcome of a participatory design among various stakeholders, namely: Park of Educational Activities of Patras, Municipal & Regional Theatre (DYPETHE) of Patras, Municipal Cultural Organisation & Municipal Conservatory, Mediation Office of the Municipality of Patras, Directorate of Primary Education of Achaia, Directorate of Secondary Education of Achaia area (Dpt. of “Cultural Projects”), Associations of Migrants (Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia), Association of Lawyers of Patras, Saint Stefan prison of Patras, Union of Police Officers of Achaia, Cultural Association of Agyia and Terpsithea districts of Patras, Directorate of Antiquities of Achaia - Archaeological Museum of Patras, Patras Visual Artists Association, UP FM radio station, European School Radio network, Institute of Intercultural Relations, IDIFOS photography club. The activation is supported by Patras Municipal Enterprise for Planning & Development-ADEP SA and it falls into the active membership of the Municipality of Patras in InterCultural Cities-ICC network coordinated by the Council of Europe. The effort was also linked with “ALDA: European Association of Local Democracy” targeting multiple promotion and awareness. It is noteworthy, that based on the intercultural strategy of the city, Patras is exploiting the diversity advantage as a parameter for growth by initiating actions applying democratic values in practice through co-working and co-creating.
