City Municipality of Stari grad

The City municipality of Stari grad represents the strict center and heart of Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia. Precisely because of its central position in the city, it represents the cultural-historical, architectural and economic center of Belgrade, and best reflects the millennial history of the creation, growth and development of Belgrade. The name of the Old Town reflects the historical place and the role of the old city center from where Belgrade further developed. The current municipality was created and took its current name in 1957 by merging the municipalities of Stari grad, Skadarlije and Terazije. The day of the municipality is the Feast of the Flower, which marks the entry of Christ into Jerusalem and is celebrated on the last week before Easter. The total area of ??the municipality is about 650 ha, of which about 435 ha is a land and about 215 ha is water area. According to the latest data from 2019, the total number of inhabitants in the municipality of Stari grad is 44613, with a population density of 8923 per km2. Although its area is far smaller than the other 16 urban and suburban municipalities of the city of Belgrade, the Old Town is the richest in cultural and historical content. Only on the territory of the municipality of Stari grad there are 8 spatial cultural and historical units.
