THE CITY

Name of our city is inseparably linked with the name of V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin, who was born here on the 22nd of April 1870. In Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk lived and created many remarkable writers: I.A. Goncharov, D.P. Oznobishin, S.G. Skitalets, D.V. Grigorovich; historian N.M. Karamzin; poets N.M. Yazykov, D.V. Davydov, D.N. Sadovnikov; satirist D.D. Minaev, many scientists, actors, painters, architects. In Simbirsk was opened one of the first theatres in Russia and one of the first public libraries in the Volga region - Karamzinskaya.

Now Ulyanovsk possesses huge cultural wealth. Buildings, houses and memorable places, which in majority have already become a part of present-day Ulyanovsk, are precious "witnesses" of historical events to descendants. Here are working dozens of museums and their branches, dramatic and puppet theatres, theater for young spectators, state Philharmonic Society, Academic Symphony Orchestra, modern movie theaters and entertaining centers, are published dozens of newspapers and magazines.

PEOPLE

Ulyanovsk is an abode of muses. One can't but wonder how many different poets, writers, politicians, figures of culture and art are betrothed with this city. Many famous people lived and worked here. The author of the "History of the Russian State" N. Karamzin, and poet N. Yazykov; A.S. Pushkin and the author of the famous "Oblomov" I. Goncharov; the author of the well-known song "Iz-za ostrova na strezhen" (Old national Russian song about the Volga River), poet D. Sadovnikov and his brother by pen, critical satirist D. Minaev. In the neighborhoods of Simbirsk lived and created the hero of the Patriotic War of 1812: dashing hussar D. Davydov and poet Ogarev. In this place worked with enthusiasm writers S. Aksakov and P. Annenkov.

Many figures of art increased cultural values of the city with their talent. Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk was decorated by efforts of such famous sculptors and architects as S. Galberg, M. Korinfsky, M. Manizer and others. A lot of names of the well-known soviet literary men are also connected with Lenin's homeland: these are Alexander Neverov, Stepan Skitalets, Marietta Shaginyan and others. Bright vestige in Ulyanovsk life left "the leader of the Russian revolution" - V.I. Ulyanov - Lenin.
