Municipality of Platanias

The Municiplality of Platanias is one of the seven municipalities of the Regional Union of Chania with highly developed primary / agricultural / nutrition sectors, is located in the west part of Crete (the biggest island of Greece, 8.336km2, 635.340 inhabitants), covers an area of 491.780 km2 and counts 15.299 inhabitants. In peak season accommodates 10 times more visitors. The municipality coast is among the most popular and cosmopolitan ones on the island and have repeatedly been awarded the international quality symbol, the “Blue Flag”. It also presents unique inland and natural beauty and hosts scenic villages, rocky mountainsides, trails suitable for trekking and cycling and historical and spiritual sites (monasteries, chapels and churches) making Platanias an ideal destination for all. Within the Municipality boundaries there are 5 protected areas, of 80.272,74 acres, and the entrance to the Samaria Gorge National Park, a World's Biosphere Reserve. Member of BELC -Building Europe with Local Consillors. It is involved in several EU funded projects both as project coordinator and as a project partner (HORIZON 2020, ERASMUS+, LIFE+, etc.).
