"More Modern Büyükçekmece, Happier People from Büyükçekmece"

Büyükçekmece Municipality was established as a township. It has been well-known of it’s agricultural and touristic potential. It showed a huge development in the 1980s and it’s population grew day by day. Today, its population is officially 201.007, but in the summer times it goes up about 1.000.000 just because of the local and international tourism potential.

On the 4th of July 1987, Buyukcekmece became a district; related to the efforts made in city planning after 1994 (drainage network, decontamination facilites, parks, environment monitoring, taking energy and telecommunication networks to the underground, illumination systems). Due to its efforts, Büyükçekmece has turned to a modern European district.

Büyükçekmece Municipality has been dazzling and eye-catching cultural activities and projects in cooperation with the European Union and other institutions. This year Büyükçekmece municipality organized and hosted the 14th Büyükçekmece International Culture and Art Festival which became the first-award winner of CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals) in 2010.
