RIBEIRA GRANDE

The municipality of Ribeira Grande is located the north coast of the island of São Miguel, the largest and most populous of the nine islands that make up the Azores in Portugal. This municipality, one of the six inhabiting the island, is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean (to the north), and the municipalities of the Nordeste (to the east), Povoação (to the southeast), Vila Franca do Campo anda Lagoa (to the south) and Ponta Delgada (to the southwest). With an area 179.5 Km2, the municipality of Ribeira Grande is divided into 14 parishes. It has a population of 32.112, with the most populous parish being Vila de Rabo de Peixe.

Ribeira Grande owes its name to the large stream that flows through the city. It has a rich and varied cultural and historical heritage, of which the highlight is its architecture. The municipality is assumed as one of the youngest municipalities of the country with great development potential, particularly in the areas of sea resources, agriculture and tourism.
