Between the 15th and 19th October, Surrey County Council will taking part in ‘European Local Democracy Week’, a Europe-wide event that aims to foster knowledge of local democracy and promote the idea of democratic participation at a local level.

Surrey is one of England’s ‘home counties’ and benefits from a number of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is the most wooded County in England and was recently host to the Olympic Cycle Road Race and Time Trail events. Surrey is also set to become the best connected County with the UK, having recently agreed a deal with BT to provide superfast broadband to the majority of its residents. This is projected to boost the Surrey economy by £30 million a year.

The Council has organised engagement events as part of European Local Democracy Week including informal question & answer sessions at local schools with County Councillors, and sessions for County Council staff that will promote political awareness within the organisation. These activities will aim to raise people’s understanding of their elected local representatives and promote engagement in the democratic process.

Surrey has a high level of community activity with more than 20,000 people volunteering for thousands of volunteer groups on a regular basis. Community engagement is of significant value to the residents of Surrey and the activities taking place in the County as part of European Local Democracy Week will aim promote this trend.
