To mark the 50th anniversary of 25 April is to celebrate the end of four decades of dictatorship and oppression. Fifty years ago, the people took to the streets in support of the April military coup, resulting in the establishment of democracy. And this year could be no different. Throughout the municipality of Cascais, various initiatives took place to highlight the historic moments when local people made a difference. The União de Freguesias Carcavelos| Parede began the day with the raising of flags on its main buildings, which was attended by the fire brigades of Parede and Carcavelos, as well as being accompanied by the parish's philharmonic bands - the Banda Filarmónica da Sociedade Musical União Paredense (SMUP) and the Banda Filarmónica da Sociedade Recreativa e Musical de Carcavelos. But it was in the Bay that the highlight took place with the performance of 7 Philharmonic Bands from the Associative, Cultural and Recreational Movement of the municipality of Cascais, who together with singer Pedro Vaz made hundreds of people at the celebrations echo, the songs that marked an era, such as ‘Grândola Vila Morena’, ‘Os Vampiros’, ‘Eu vim de longe’, ‘Índios da Meia-Praia’, ‘Venham mais cinco’ and, of course, the song that started the Armed Forces movement in the early hours of the 24th - ‘E depois do Adeus’. Finalising the initiative were the Philharmonic Band of the Sociedade Musical Sportiva Alvidense, the Band of the Sociedade de Instrução e Recreio de Janes e Malveira, the Philharmonic Band of the Sociedade Familiar e Recreativa da Malveira da Serra, the Philharmonic Band of the Sociedade Musical União Paredense (SMUP), the Philharmonic Band of the Carcavelos Recreational and Musical Society, the Philharmonic Band of the Talaíde Musical and Sports Solidarity Group and the Band of the 1º de Maio Dramatic Recreational Group from Tires, joined together on stage to play and sing the National Anthem with one voice with everyone present. "After 50 years, we have renewed hope. Not everything has happened as planned and dreamt of by those who made the 25th of April happen, but what is certain is that there has been a great deal of progress since the 25th of April 74 until the 24th of April 2024, which we are celebrating today," said Carlos Carreiras, Mayor of Cascais.
