« Vicovaro » takes part in the European Local Democracy Week - a paneuropean event coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe - as « Partner city »
Vicovaro is a small municipality near Rome (45 km), in a hilly area of the Aniene River Valley, surrounded by three naturalistic parks. With its 4.076 inhabitants, is one of the most populous community in the area, and its schools are attended by students from neighboring municipalities. Local economy is based on services and commerce, but most of the citizens work in the industrial areas around Rome. Vicovaro is fostering its local identity, rich in history, traditions and culture, involving other municipalities on wide area's development projects, providing citizens with good services and attracting tourism by an integrated offer. Avoiding social disruption and disaffection of young generations with thier own territory is crucial to face the decline of rural communities. An extensive plan of cultural initiatives involving citizens of all ages and groups is essential to mantaining social cohesion and boosting the community resiliance.
