Niš is considered to be the crossroads of East and West and thanks to its geostrategic position it has always been the meeting point of different nations, different ideas, cultures and traditions which provided the city with a great cultural legacy. Its heritage is the result of a long and turbulent city history and influences of different cultures. Niš, today, is economic, industrial, regional, administrative, educational, health, cultural and sports center of the region of Southeastern Serbia. The population of 300 000 inhabitants makes the City of Niš the third biggest city in the Republic of Serbia. The city territory of 600 km2 is divided into five municipalities. The residents and visitors alike are blessed with great cultural and entertainment opportunities. The cultural life of Niš is shaped by the numerous institutions and numerous festivals and cultural events can make anyone’s experience of Niš complete whether we are talking about jazz music, national film, choral performances. Niš has become recognizable as new destination on the map of extreme sports fan and sportsmen. The exquisite natural attractions of the surrounding mountains and gorges are ideal for extreme sports. As a dynamic medium sized city Niš offers its inhabitants and visitors much of what big city life has, but without the urban chaos and without diminishing the quality of life.
