Aylesbury

Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire, situated approximately 60 km north west of London and presently has an estimated population of about 60,000. Aylesbury Town Council is the first tier of local government and is closest to the community, representing the electorate through 25 elected councillors in a total of 13 electoral wards. The Council provides local services including allotments, the town cemetery, holds the mayoral office, produces a programme of annual public events to promote the town and awards grants to local community groups. In addition, the Council undertakes devolved services from the County Council, provides hanging baskets, planters and floral beds each year in the Aylesbury in Bloom promotion and also directly manages a childrens' play-centre. Aylesbury is twinned with Bourg-en-Bresse (France). The Council also recognises the importance of engaging with young people and has established the Aylesbury Town Youth Council, now in its third year.

Chesterfield Borough Council

In Chesterfield, every year our Democratic and Scrutiny Team engage with as many local primary and secondary schools as possible. We encourage discussions on local, national and international issues and introduce all ages to democracy by running mock ballots, holding debates, having tours of council buildings and arranging question time-style panels, all with the support of our local councillors. Kirklees

We’re committed to growing a stronger local democracy in Kirklees, from the ground up. We’ve worked with citizens from local places across Kirklees to create a shared goal for active citizenship, called “Shaped by People: We make our places what they are”. This is a shared strategic priority for Kirklees Council and our partners. Our aim is to enable more people to directly shape their local place, as active citizens, and for everyone to be involved in the decisions which affect their everyday lives. We have involved over 10,000 citizens in activities to shape their local neighbourhoods, through our How Good Is Our Place? programme, which focuses on meaningful conversations and actions in our local places. We have also worked with young citizens to create a pioneering Democracy Friendly Schools programme, to help children and young people learn about - and be an active part of - local democracy. Our work is based on the learning and recommendations of the Kirklees Democracy Commission. We explored what a vibrant local democracy should look like - for the next generation and beyond - by listening to and learning from our citizens. Our report 'Growing a Stronger Local Democracy' is based on a year of evidence-based research and debate, involving over 1,000 people.
