Bread Comes Out of Waste at European Week of Local Democracy

According to the leading theme of the European Democracy Week, “Protecting the environment: local communities take action”, Beykoz Municipality tries to draw attention of the citizens for environmental issues. With the “Take Your Bread Out Of Waste Project”, is applied through the aims of the “Zero Waste” policies; and the residents of Beykoz buy 1 bread for every 5 kg of packaging waste. Thus, they make contributions to the environmental protection, sustainable recycling policies in the district and more importantly to their own family budgets. The people of Beykoz collect the packaging of the products – such as paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, etc. - separately from the own household wastes. The collected wastes are delivered to the authorized personals at the waste collection points in Beykoz. There are five points in Beykoz: Kavac?k, Ortaçe?me, So?uksu, and Yenimahalle. The delivered wastes are weighted in; and then the results are loaded onto the smart cards distributed to the citizens by the municipality. As a result, citizens are received in exchange to buy 1 piece of 300 gr bread for every 5 kg of packaging waste.
