21/09/2021
In the frame of European Local Democracy Week 2021 edition, the establishment of Local Democracy Agency Edremit in Turkey, represents the most important and significant event in order to provide to citizens an alternative instrument to get involved in local decision-making process and calling them to partecipate in the development of different activities such as participatory budget, consultation groups, etc. According to the principles and mechanisms of Local Democracy Agencies of ALDA, a LDA is not only an instruments acting at local level but also a wide platform working at international level with the support of several international and European partners. The potential partners of LDA Edremit in Turkey are the Municipality of Lushnje (Albania), Municipality of Budva (Montenegro) Municipality of Mioveni (Romania). In order to discuss the potential partnership to be developed and deepened in the establishment of LDA Edremit, an online meeting was held on 21 September 2021. Other potential Turkish CSOs partners took part to the meeting.

After several months of consultations and meetings with ALDA team, international partners and local civil society associations, the first Local Democracy Agency in Turkey was established in Edremit with the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding. The ceremony attended by Vice President of ALDA, ALDA General Secretary and ALDA Coordinator for Mediterranean Area, was celebrated on 15th October as flagship event of the European Local Democracy Week in order to underline the importance and the significance of this event and the positive implications the Local democracy Agency in Edremit will have in terms of citizen participation and local democracy for the city and the population. Due to Covid 19 restrictions still in force in several countries, not all the partners had the opportunity to take part physically to the ceremony. For this reason we organised an hybrid event with representatives of Budva Municipality (Montenegro) and Lujna Municipality (Albania), MEDAR and Elbarlament and Ahmetbey Municipality. They followed the programme and the presentations with a virtual signature that will be made real by traditional mail. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by representatives and the president of Citizens Council of Edremit Municipality and other several local CSOs founding partners of LDA Edremit.
