On April 2021 Edremit Municipality awarded the Plaque of Honour by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The city of Edremit awarded this prestigious recognition according to the high European dimension of the projects and activities developed during this year, including the celebration of the European Local Democracy Week and the establishment of the Local Democracy Agency in Edremit (the first one in Turkey). The Award Ceremony will be held on 15th October with the participation of the Turkish member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mr. Yunus EMRE and representatives of ALDA.
The Plaque of Honour is a recognition awarded by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to the cities particularly committed in the spreading and developing of the European dimension among their citizens and the community. The Municipality of Edremit, in fact, due to its constant and continuous engagement in enhancing European programmes and initiatives in order to provide better opportunities for youngsters, innovative mechanisms of participatory citizenship, new channels of dialogue between local authority and local associations, supporting the spreading of European policies and priorities such as climate changes, cultural democracy, intercultural dialogue and sustainable economic development. The ceremony was held at the city Council of Edremit Municipality with the participation of the Turkish member of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mr. Yunus EMRE and ALDA's Vice President, ALDA's General Secretary and ALDA coordinator for Mediterranean Area. During the awarding speeches released by the Director of Human Resources and Education Tamer ACAR and the Mayor of Edremit Selman Hasan ARSLAN, Mr. Yunur EMRE member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe described in a detailed way all the activities organised by the Municipality of Edremit which leaded to the award of the Plaque of Honour. Among the activities the most important are without doubt the celebration of the European Local Democracy Week and the establishment of the first Local Democracy Agency in Turkey with ALDA.
