Les enfants ont été reçus par le maire, qui leur a expliqué les principales responsabilités de sa fonction et celles de ses adjoints, ainsi que les différents services de la commune. Après un court et agréable moment passé avec le maire, ils ont été invités à se réunir dans la salle du Conseil où ils ont élu leurs représentants pour diriger la réunion. À l’ordre du jour : choisir la couleur d’un pont du centre-ville qui doit être repeint. Tous les membres du conseil ont voté à bulletin secret pour une couleur parmi les quatre proposées. Le but était de faire comprendre aux enfants le mécanisme électoral d’un régime démocratique et de leur montrer combien le principe démocratique est efficace et essentiel dans un processus décisionnel. Le maire Kamil Saka a ainsi promis aux enfants que le pont serait peint en bleu dans quelques semaines afin de les convaincre durablement qu’une élection est synonyme de changement.
À la fin de la réunion du conseil, le maire a distribué des cadeaux aux élèves, notamment des ballons, des brochures sur la SEDL et Lokum’la Avrupa’ya, une introduction à l’UE éditée par la délégation de l’Union européenne en Turquie.
Within the framework of the European Local Democracy Week, the Edremit Municipality decided to enhance the main theme of this year illustrating to the children of an Elementary School of Edremit (Cumhuriyet ?lkokulu; Republic Primary School) how a local authority works.
Children have been received by the Mayor who explained them the tasks of his appointment and the several assignments of the other department of the municipality. After a brief and enjoyable time spent with the Mayor, the students have been invited to sit in the Council Chamber where they established a children council. The first item on the council’s agenda was to decide about which colour Municipality should use to paint an over bridge situated in the centre of the city of Edremit. All the children members of the council expressed their preference among 4 candidate colours throughout a secret ballot. The purpose of this activity was to acquaint children with the election mechanism of a democratic system showing them how much democracy can be efficient and crucial in decision process. For this reason Mayor Mr.Kamil Saka promised the children that the over bridge would be painted blue in a few weeks to strength their future certainty that voting means to make a change.
Edremit Mayor Kamil Saka and Vice-Presidents Fatma Özgirgin and Mehmet Erta? left their places to the Presidents of the Children's Assembly and their assistants. The result of the voting (blue colour) was declared by the president of the council. At the end of the Children's council session, the students received several gifts from the Mayor like, balloons, leaflet of ELDW and the book “Lokum’la Avrupa’ya” an introduction to EU edited by EU delegation of Turkey.
